Who is this practice for? Anyone with a body can take part in a 5Rhythms class although a standard class is usually recommended for anyone 15 or over, children tend to get bored if it's a full two hour session which can distract dancers from their process. It's usually quite active with between 1-2 hours of moving but as you move at your own pace, it's suitable for all levels of fitness. You don't need any experience or ability as there is no right or wrong way to move, no steps to follow.
What if I think I can't dance? In western culture dancing can carry a lot of judgement. Forget what you think you know about dance and instead, think about intuitive movement as a birthright. You were born wanting to move and your body knows this, let the body take the lead.
Is 5Rhythms a therapy? Please be aware that I am not a psychologist or therapist. I simply offer a space and embodied practice where we can find our own healing through the body. It’s important to inform me of any physical or mental health concerns. Should you encounter anything that requires professional help, I encourage you to seek it.
What should I wear? Wear whatever you like as long as it's comfortable and you can move in it. Layers work best because you can adjust what you're wearing if you feel hot or cold. Soft shoes like trainers or dance shoes can be worn, barefoot is recommended but sometimes not practical depending on the venue.
What should I bring? A water bottle is essential. A financial contributions i greatly appreciated but concessions are available if money is tight. I ask you turn any devices off during our time together.
What will we do? We will move freely and as a group to a wide variety of music including world, electronic and ambient. The music will invite you into different rhythms and patterns of movement. Through bringing awareness to our bodies we will explore the direct experience of this moment and what is arising in us.
